Some Crazy Ideas From Caspan's Head!

Well I think everyone was quite upset that the new PlayBook OS 2 was not released when Mike L left the stage on Tuesday morning. I was quite excited to watch the live coverage and was also a bit disappointed to get nothing more then an announcement that BBX was the new platform name. With that said this expectation for RIM to release the new OS was my own fault, RIM has said nothing that it was going to be released, so this was just BlackBerry community hype that caused me to think it would be. Even though we did not get a public released of the BlackBerry Tablet OS 2 we did get something. RIM has allowed curious people and developers to download a beta version of the OS, I was happy to at least get something to play with. The current OS just feels so stale to me now and needs so many improvements, so it is worth losing Bridge applications to get this new OS. To be quite frank I like the fact that bridge is there but I don’t think I use it very often because my BlackBerry is never more then 1 foot away from me at all times.

So I decided to make the leap and see what was up with the new OS. After doing a bit of searching I found the link to register for the PlayBook OS 2 download. The page was kind of hard to find so for everyone else here is the link https://bdsc.webapps.blackberry.com/android/beta/bbtablet20/register/. I for one cannot believe how simple RIM has made this process. If you want to test out the new Beta OS all you need to do is go to the above site  and enter the PIN of your PlayBook. Once you PIN has been added that’s it!  RIM will process your request and then an update will be made available to you on your Tablet. One click and you are done! HOLLY CRAP RIM……. thank you, thank you, thank you,  for listening and making a process easy!

So I will be toying around to see if and what has changed, and if it is worth keeping on till the public release comes out. One thing I wanted to test was if when bridged that the internet connection still works to my BlackBerry or if everything that uses BlackBerry Bridge is dead. I know you can’t use the bridge apps but have not read about bridged internet connection. Mind you I have read some places that say you can use your browser to access the bridged applications still (http://127.0.0.1:187) .

I will update my post when I have more information.

If you have read my previous post about my backups and trying to get 2 different 2 TB drive to hots wap then you know that I am a person that believes in doing my backups the correct way. I wont go into details on my backup strategy as I already talked about it on my earlier post (Article here) But needless to say Windows 7 has finally fixed the issue in SP1 and I can hot swap my drives now with no issues…yeahhhhh. The next problem I kept facing was the fact that my local backup script said to always backup to the B drive. Instead of scripting 2 different tasks that were exactly the same but one backed up to drive A on week 1 and the other to drive B on week 2. This would have forced me to have the right drive home at the right time and if I forgot to swap the drives well then the backup would fail. If I added a new directory to script 1 and I forgot to add it to script 2 then my backups would be incomplete…. you get the idea why it was a bad idea. The only reason I wanted two different scripts was because Windows is awesome (sarcasm) and only remembers the last dive to use a drive letter. Meaning if I took out drive 1 that was mounted as B and then I inserted drive 2 and then changed its drive letter to B then remove that one and put drive 1 that was originally B, well you would think Windows would say “Hey I have seen this drive before and it was using the B drive, why do we just make things simple and give it B again” but no Windows has forgot this drive entirely, why? because I don’t think practical people engineer this operating system to be honest. Instead Windows only remembers the last drive to be assigned the drive letter B. So the only way to make things simple and not require myself to every week insert the new drive and then remember to change its drive letter to B, I though make one A make one B that way they are different and will always stay the same and windows never gives out A or B automatically because it reserves them for floppy drives. I soon found the error in my ways as mentioned above, it was just not a good idea and by solving the one problem I created 5 different ones, so I decided that I can live with the one issue of needing to change the drive letters each week.

I was explaining this issue to a fellow IT friend the other day as to why I have to keep renaming my drive letters each week and he said “I think there is software for that called USBDLM” I assumed he meant some crappy freeware change your drive letter program for newbies instead of using disk manager. When he found the site http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbdlm_e.html the showed it to me, I was still not impressed as it looked like my 9 year old coded the HTML and it was basic on top of basic. If it was not for him saying others speak highly of this program I would have never gave it a second look. Man am I glad I didn’t, USBDLM is hands down the best program out there, and installs as a service with blew me away, it was x64 compatible which took it even a step further with me.

So after about an hour with this product I almost wanted to yell at the developer because it was not working for me. I created my INI file line for line to give my drive any letter  and it would not work. So I stopped and took a breath and decided to jump into the log files to see if they could tell me anything, 20 minutes later I could see it reading in my INI file but doing nothing with it. Only after another 20 minutes did I have an epiphany, my drive is not USB it’s SATA or ATA as the program saw it (I used the “ListUsbDrives_To_Notepad.cmd” in the install folder to figure this out) . So after this I started to look and sure enough USBDLM works natively only on USB unless I specify otherwise. So after that I added a single line to my INI  and it was working awesome. So I just wanted to share with everyone else my joy for this program and my configuration for using USBDLM in the following configuration:

2 Hot Swapable SATA drives
Neither drive will every be in at the same time as the other
Both need to get the letter B when inserted
What drive letter they should be is held in an INI on the drive I insert

USBDLM.INI on computer

[DriveLetters]
BusType=ATA
Letters=%drive%\USBDLM.INI

USBDLM.INI on removable SATA drives

[DriveLetters]
Letters=B

Please make sure you use the “ListUsbDrives_To_Notepad.cmd” that is included in teh install directory to figure out what yourBusType is. From what I read Windows XP can see it as RAID or SATA etc.. so to be sure run that command to see what windows sees that drive as.

And that’s it, I hope this helps other people in configuring 2 hot swappable drives that need to be the same letter. Take my word for it, USBDLM is not easy to configure because you have to know what your doing, but once you figure it out it is the most powerful Drive Letter Manger out there period exclamation point .!

So I have started to design my new site BBBlackBook.com, I figured if I posted it here then I would be forced to actually get it done. What this site will be is a comparison app to compare BlackBerry devices against one another. It will be so simple it will be the of the best BlackBerry comparison tools out there.

What the site will include is a homepage with a list of all the devices in quick image format. You would click on a device and that will bring up the specs for that device. You will then be able to add that device to your compare list and then you can search for another device. Once you have your list with all the devices you want to compare then you click the option to show your list and it will show all the devices side by side so you can compare them. It will also include things like recent OS releases with email/RSS subscriptions to show you when the devices have been updated. There will be an option to email a link to your friend to show them the list as well so you can share the list you built and discuss the differances.

Eventually I will add other devices like Tablets and other manufacturers like Apple and Android, you might ask why but a lot of people want to know what is the difference between the iPhone 4 and the BlackBerry Bold 9900 if you cannot put them side by side then how can you compare them. This will be more of a version 2 thing for now I just want to get v1 up and running.

If you have any idea to make this site better pass it along and it just might make it into the v1 build.

 As of today my new favorite thing to hate is a nice pair a good pliers. As a guy that likes to do stuff with my hands and also mod stuff once in a while, the set of pliers is my tool of choice. Pliers make the job so much easier and there are a million uses for them. Well yesterday I pinched the side of my finder for about the 100th time in my life from using pliers like the one in the picture. Now you might say “well I guess you were using them wrong!” maybe you are right or maybe you are wrong, but I hate these damn things for their design. If you look just under the pivot point you will see the manufacture decided to put a set of teeth at the back. So when you are doing a full grip on these and they slip guess what part of you is right in that exact point? That’s right your finger, and it gets crushed and it hurts like punching the sun. I do get why they put the teeth there, it is normally because this is the best pressure point closet to the pivot of the pliers normally used for crimping something and needed to be on the other side but to make it multi functional they put cutters there. So let me recap, they put it there because it is the best crushing point!!!!! The excess skin on my finger just got crushed by the best possible crushing point of the tool. Thanks who ever came up with this idea! I will never buy a pair of pliers again that have this!

If anyone knows me then they will know that “as it is” is not good enough for me. I always want to make things better and enjoy my devices that I have. I like to mod things a lot but not to the point of destroying something but more making accessories that will make it easier to use the device. Well I got my new PlayBook the other day and I found that I like to have it up on my desk at work so that I can see whats going on with things like Google Plus, CrackBerry etc… I decided instead of having it laying on my desk it would be nice to have it right above my monitor and make it like a 3rd screen.

I went to Home Depot and got a small tray that is meant for below chalk boards or white boards. it was about 4 feet long so I needed to cut it down to match the length on my laptop screen. One thing I wanted to be able to do was charge the PlayBook while sitting there so I took out my handy Dremel tool and I could out a nice rectangle out so that the charger could be used while laying there.

By the way my second monitor in the picture has an HDMI input for it and I can switch to that input when I want to to get my Playbook on my 20″ monitor. My next step is to fabricate it so you plug the PlayBook down to the connectors so you don’t have to manually plug it in as I do now.

Total cost of the project $10 CDN and about 1 Hour of time

Tell me what you think!
